No more going against the current

Can we change how others see us?

Not directly.

If we change, others may begin to look at us differently.

What if we try something else?

Because what we can do is change our perspective on others.

If we try to look at those around us attentively (even if they don't know it), asking ourselves: who is that person? how are they? what are they feeling?; and if we then have to interact with them, instead of automatic phrases like how are you? (without expecting an answer) we direct a special phrase to them, surely after a week, ten days, we would notice that others look at us differently, with appreciation, approval, even esteem.

Shall we try?

Why should what others think of me be more important than what I think of them?

When my power to change lies solely in my own responses.
